Clinical audit is a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes through systematic review of care, against explicit criteria (clinical guidelines). Aspects of the structure, process and outcomes of care are selected and systematically evaluated. Where indicated, changes are implemented and further monitoring is used to confirm improvement in healthcare delivery.

 Audit can be considered to have 4 principal steps:

  • Selection of a topic

  • Identification of an appropriate standard

  • Data collection to assess performance against the standard

  • Implementation of changes to improve care if necessary
